Diagnostic Wax-Ups

Models are generally used for cosmetic and restorative cases when the doctor would like to simulate the outcome before beginning treatment. The final model is crafted from colored wax that closely mimics natural teeth and gums. Wax models are useful for showing patients how their teeth's shape, length, alignment, and function will be improved prior to the procedure. It also allows the dentist to determine the best avenue of treatment for optimal results. Wax models take the guess-work out of dentistry.

Fabrication of the Model

To create a wax model, Dr. Harden takes an impression and creates a stone model of the teeth. The stone model is mounted on a machine that simulates how the teeth come together. Then, Dr. Harden works on the model just as he would the patient's teeth and notes the details of the process. He adds wax to simulate the effects veneers, crowns, or bridges. This simulated treatment allows the dentist to discern the most effective treatment method for a patient's unique needs. With wax models, Dr. Harden can also determine the best position for the teeth, so the teeth and jaws are properly aligned. Wax models allow the dentist to more effectively communicate with the patient and gives the patient the opportunity to critique the end result. This process is key to the ultimate success of the smile makeover.
