Teeth Whitening

Sparkling, white teeth can enhance your smile and contribute to a positive self-image. Dr. Harden implemented teeth whitening at his practice over 25 years ago, and he has seen this treatment increase in popularity throughout the years. Our Woodstock office offers two methods for whitening, both of which deliver exceptional results.

Cause of Tooth Discoloration

Factors that contribute to tooth discoloration include medications, excessive fluoride, trauma, metal dental restorations, genetics, illnesses, aging, and consumption of staining substances, such as coffee, tea, and tobacco products. Most stains can be lightened with professional whitening, although some stains, like those caused by tetracycline, are best dealt with via whitening alternatives. As your cosmetic dentist, Dr. Harden will discuss all  of your options and help you decide upon the ideal treatment.

Preparation for Whitening

Before whitening your teeth, Dr. Harden will diagnose any dental conditions. Tooth decay and gum disease can lead to complications if not treated prior to teeth whitening. For this reason, over-the-counter whitening systems contain a very low concentration of peroxide (the whitening agent) and are not as effective as professional systems.

Two Options

For your convenience, we offer take-home and in-office teeth whitening. We have chosen the Opalescence whitening system, because they continually strive to improve their products. In addition, the high concentration of fluoride in the Opalescence whitening gel reduces post-whitening sensitivity and strengthens tooth enamel.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening
After a preliminary examination, we will take impressions of your teeth and create custom trays for you to wear at home. Line the trays with the whitening solution we provide and wear them after brushing. Most patients prefer to wear them while they sleep, but you can choose the time that’s most convenient for you. After a period of 1 to 3 weeks (depending on the amount of staining) your teeth will lighten significantly. Results can last up to five years. With take-home whitening, you can reuse the trays as needed to give your smile power a quick boost.

In-Office Teeth Whitening
With in-office whitening, you visit Fountain View Dentistry and we safely whiten your teeth for you. The entire process takes about an hour. In-office whitening is perfect for our busy patients, as well as those who don’t feel comfortable whitening themselves. During your appointment, we carefully place the high-concentration whitening solution on your teeth and monitor your progress as it removes the staining compounds. The cost for in-office whitening is typically higher than take-home whitening, but patients find the procedure convenient and highly effective.
